Hiking by the shore

The day after the Helgufoss hike (see yesterday's entry), I walked the path from the Grótta lighthouse to the Seltjarnarnes golf course, around the course and back to Grótta. Click here to see the area on Wikimapia.

Helgufoss

On May 20th I hiked up to this waterfall with three of my friends. The waterfall is called Helgufoss and is in the Kaldakvísl river in Mosfellsdalur, just outside Reykjavík. It is believed to be named after a woman from one of the Icelandic Sagas.

It's about an hour's hike to get there, starting at Gljúfrasteinn and following the river, or you can drive a little further up the road and park the car and walk for about 5 minutes, which is fine if you want to have a picnic but not much good as exercise.

Snapshots from Siglufjörður

I visited Siglufjörður on the weekend of May 16-17. The weather was beautiful, but it was a bit too windy on the Sunday to be out and about much. These photos were taken on a morning walk through the town on the Saturday morning, except the last one which was taken on the Sunday.

Enjoy!

Emergency shelter

Once upon a time these shelters were to be seen near almost every mountain road in Iceland, but after a spate of vandalism and misuse some were removed. With increased road safety and GSM connectivity, more of them have been dismantled. A few remain, however, and this is one. It's situated in eastern Skagafjörður, not far from the road to Siglufjörður.
