At the cobbler's - Hjá skósmiðnum

This cobbler has his place of business on the street near the entrance to one of the busiest shopping streets in the city center, just below the Mall. He and a colleague sat on the ground and repaired shoes all day long and during my time there I never saw either of them idle. He fixed the shoe by sewing the sole back on, a fine if unusual piece of repair that still holds.

Later, he patched up a tear in the upper of the other shoe so well that if you didn't know it was there, you had to take a very close look to find it, and he also repaired my daypack.

Þessi skósmiður sat á götunni efst í einni af hinum iðandi verslunargötum borgarinnar og gerði við skó frá morgni til kvölds, með verkfærum sem tæknivæddir íslenskir skómiðir hefðu líklegast gefist upp á að nota. Hann saumaði sólann aftur á skóinn, og sú viðgerð var enn í fínu lagi í lok ferðar. Hann gerði seinna við gat á hinum skónum, og gerði það svo vel að viðgerðin sást varla. Hann lagaði líka bakpokann minn þegar önnur ólin tók að gefa sig.
