The Hawa Mahal - rear view

It was still just drizzling intermittently that first day when I found my way into the side road at the back of the  the Hawa Mahal, the Palace of the Winds, where the visitor entrance is located. This is the best known building in Jaipur, and shows an interesting and seamless fusion of the pillared canopies and delicate pillars of Rajput architecture and the inlay work and arches of Mughal architecture. As the name suggests, it was designed to catch and make the most of every cooling breeze during hot summers. The pillared and onion-domed back entrance is white and honey-coloured and contrasts nicely with the red/pink sandstone of the famous façade.

Það var tímabundin uppstytta þegar ég beygði inn í hliðargötuna sem liggur að bakhlið og gestainngangi Hawa Mahal, Hallar Vindanna. Eins og nafnið bendir til, þá var þessi litla höll byggð sérstaklega til að  nýta sem allra best hinn minnsta svala sem barst í sumarhitunum í Rajasthan fyrir daga rafknúinnar loftkælingar.

Það kannast líklega enginn við þetta hlið sem ekki hefur komið á staðinn, en á bak við kúplana glittir í frægasta hluta byggingarinnar.
