Yule Calendar: 13 days to go

Icelanders read and produce more books per capita than any other nation in the world. For commercial reasons most books are published in the months leading up to Yule, in a phenomenon that has come to be called "The Christmas Book Flood" (in Icelandic: Jólabókaflóðið). Book adverts dominate the media from mid-November until Christmas Eve and books are the favourite choice to both give and receive as Yule presents. Here a stuffed Santa sits in the window display of a bookshop, in company with Haruki Murakami and the book that seems set to become this year's non-fiction bestseller.
